Class 3
Hypothesis we are working with:
‘Reactivity is diminished when we see triggers as arising do to causes and conditions.’

the Links of Purchasing of a Hummingbird Feeder
Senses: bring us in ...
Contact: with the hummingbird feeder. We then feel...
Feeling: Like/ Dislike/ Neutral – I like that humming bird feeder. Which leads us to begin...
Craving: Fixating – If I own that hummingbird feeder my life will show a marked improvement.
(This is a big area where we can work. As this area is based on a avidya (universal confusion)!!!)
Grasping: Hit “Buy Now”.
Birth: The birth of your new self as owning a hummingbird feeder.
Aging and Death: of that new you who owns a humming bird feeder. The feeder comes, and you set it up and eventually you lose interest and it hangs untended to or it breaks or it gets dropped off at the thrift shop.

Rewording Longfellow
“If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man's life, sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.”
―Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, The Complete Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
'If we could read the secret history of the hummingbird feeder, we would find impermanence, lack of self existence, and dissatisfaction enough to disarm all grasping'
'If we could read the secret history of the itch on our nose, we would find temporality, trivia, and illusory existence (or illusory reified labeling) enough to disarm all need to scratch it.'
3 Marks Of Existence
A) All things are impermanent, they arise and then pass away.
B) All things are incapable of providing lasting satisfaction.
C) All things lack a substantial core or essence.

Look for reified language in the world
"Maga is make America great again. By the way they love African American people they love black people. Maga loves the black people."

Class 2
"Haiku" for today’s class:
‘Reactivity is diminished
when we see triggers
as arising due to causes and conditions.’
(i.e. Reactivity is diminished when we see the world as made up of “happenings” not as made up of “things”.)
1) Most suffering states rely on solidifying labels.
2) As we de-solidify labels we defuse their power to cause us suffering.
3) De-solidifying means seeing things as arising dependently on other factors. aka co-dependent arising or Dependent origination.
1) Reifying means engaging in the fallacy of misplaced concreteness.
2) When things are concrete, they are not dependent on other phenomena
3) Not being dependent gives them power to cause us suffering

The Quarrel by Conrad Aiken
Suddenly, after the quarrel, while we waited, Disheartened, silent, with downcast looks, nor stirred Eyelid nor finger, hopeless both, yet hoping Against all hope to unsay the sundering word: While all the room’s stillness deepened, deepened about us And each of us crept his thought’s way to discover How, with as little sound as the fall of a leaf, The shadow had fallen, and lover quarreled with lover; And while, in the quiet, I marveled—alas, alas-- At your deep beauty, your tragic beauty, torn As the pale flower is torn by the wanton sparrow-- This beauty, pitied and loved, and now forsworn; It was then, when the instant darkened to its darkest,-- When faith was lost with hope, and the rain conspired To strike its gray arpeggios against our heartstrings,-- When love no longer dared, and scarcely desired: It was then that suddenly, in the neighbor’s room, The music started: that brave quartette of strings Breaking out of the stillness, as out of our stillness, Like the indomitable heart of life that sings When all is lost; and startled from our sorrow, Tranced from our grief by that diviner grief, We raised remembering eyes, each looked at other, Blinded with tears of joy; and another leaf Fell silently as the first; and in the instant The shadow was gone, our quarrel became absurd; And we rose, to the angelic voices of music, And I touched your hand, and we kissed, without a word. |

‘Reactivity is diminished when we see triggers as arising do to causes and conditions.’
i.e. Reactivity is diminished when we see the world as made up of “happenings” not as made up of “things”.

2)or Most suffering states rely on reified labels.
3)As we de-reify triggers we defuse them.
4)De-reifying means seeing things as arising dependently on other factors. aka Dependent origination.

things vs. happenings
“ To better understand the world I think we shouldn’t reduce it to things we should reduce it to happenings and the happening is always between different systems, always relations, like a kiss which is something that happens between two people.”
- Carlos Rovelli
“We can not finally separate out any phenomena from the context of other phenomena. We can only speak in terms of relationships.”
- His Holiness the Dalai Lamam

EMptiness in one sentence
Mulamadhyamikakarika
Chapter 24, verse 18
Whatever is dependently co-arisen
That is explained to be emptiness.
Or perhaps we could say:
What ever exists in dependence on other factors is empty of having a core essence.

- All Buddhist schools agree that dependence here means dependent on causes and conditions.
- Svatantrika also says dependent on parts
- Madhyamika adds dependence on a labeling consciousness
Four Noble Truths: One way of saying it
- Suffering is real and extremely pervasive
- Suffering arises from craving for things which are falsely reified
- Freedom is possible: Not freedom from loss or unpleasant experience, but freedom to act from spaciousness as opposed to contractedness.
- Ignorant (i.e reified) craving has a cause and anything that has a cause can be dismantled by removing the cause.
